Critical Literacy Through Picture Books and Digital Storytelling

In this classroom-based project, classroom teachers Amy Parliament and Margaret Thompson-James, and I explore two enduring fairy tales (Red Riding Hood and Cinderella) through a critical literacy lens.  We examine what happens when young students are asked to engage with multiple versions of each story through the four dimensions of critical literacy:  disruption of the commonplace, examination of multiple viewpoints, focus on social/political issues, and action steps for social justice (Lewison, Flint & Van Sluys, 2002).  Students will be immersed in the stories through drama and writing activities, make predictions and connections, deconstruct and reconstruct the stories through various digital media as a way of taking action.
