Smart Camera Networks, Computer Vision, Computer Graphics:
Distributed active camera control, privacy preserving video surveillance, behavior-based computer animation, autonomous characters for computer animation and games, autonomous agent architectures, cognitive vision and control
My research interests center on the study and development of computational models of autonomous purposeful behavior in the context of self-organizing sensor networks, unmanned space robotics, and intelligent virtual characters. In my intellectual pursuits, I am inspired by the amazing biological systems around us, which are capable of sustained, unsupervised, sophisticated behavior in a world that is notoriously difficult to model. The Grand Promise of our field, I believe, is systems that are smart enough to perform their tasks reliably with minimal or no human supervision. I find the challenge of contributing to the development of such systems exhilarating. To date my work has spanned computer vision and graphics, as well as sensor networks, robotics, and artificial life.
Believing that UOIT and the larger community that it is a part of must work together towards common goals, I am also a member of the executive board of UOIT's Community Link Unit (CLU).
